“divinations”
the convergence of improvisation, indeterminate notation, and digital signal processing.
A clock face diagram is used instead of standard notation. Rocks and sand are cast onto the diagram and are then interpreted by the performer(s) based on where they fall. The work is an improvisation based on the indeterminacy of each resulting cast. The other element of “divinations” is the live digital audio processing which is also derived from the resulting cast. The digital effects may also be added later in post production for pre-recorded performances.
At its simplest, a performance may be limited to one performer, one cast, and one material. In contrast, an ensemble like a string quartet may opt to pre-determine a structure, ascribe each performer to a specific material, ascribe each performer to a fixed role, or have multiple casts, all of which will yield a more intricate performance. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate an approach and delivery that is idiosyncratic to each performer’s ability and artistry. There is no fixed duration for the performance of “divinations”.
